SCOTCH HILL TRUFFLE FARM

WINTER TRUFFLE FESTIVAL WEST GIPPSLAND
“A BLACK GOLD RUSH”

WIN NEWS

Scotch Hill appears in a Win News feature on West Gippsland’s growing truffle industry and the upcoming Winter Truffle Festival, as Ron Geritz and Boogie uncover their first truffles.

"Inside the Win News Feature on the Winter Truffle Festival"

As the Win News story showed, Scotch Hill is part of a fast-growing community of truffle producers transforming West Gippsland into a winter food destination. With more than 5,000 inoculated trees now in the ground across the region, local farmers are beginning to see the results of years of soil preparation, oak planting, and patient waiting. Ron’s first truffle marks an exciting turning point not only for our farm, but for the wider industry taking shape around Neerim South and Noojee.

The segment also introduced viewers to the upcoming Winter Truffle Festival West Gippsland—a collaborative regional event supported through the Victorian Government’s Forestry Transition Program. Designed to coincide with peak truffle season, the festival will bring together growers, chefs, families, and visitors for hunts, tastings, winter fireside experiences and educational activities. With accessibility and community at its core, the festival aims to celebrate West Gippsland’s unique terroir while showcasing truffles at an approachable price point.

What to Expect on a Scotch Hill Truffle Hunt...

A Scotch Hill truffle hunt is far more than a walk through the trees—it’s an immersive winter experience set against some of the most breathtaking scenery in West Gippsland. Perched on rolling hills with sweeping views across the valley to Mt Baw Baw, our truffle orchard offers a setting that feels both peaceful and dramatic, especially on crisp winter mornings when mist lingers between the oaks.

Your hunt begins with an introduction to how truffles grow, the science behind their aroma, and the years of care that go into producing these rare winter treasures. Then it’s time to follow Boogie, our rescue dog turned professional truffle hunter, as he works through the orchard searching for the unmistakable scent of ripe truffles beneath the soil. Watching Boogie work is a highlight for many guests—his speed, focus and joy are infectious.

Once the truffles are unearthed, guests gather around our Truffles & Flames fireside station to warm up and taste the season’s harvest. Expect the rich aroma of fresh truffle shaving through the air as you enjoy simple but indulgent tastings designed to showcase the flavour of West Gippsland black truffles. It’s a moment of winter comfort—crackling fire, rolling hills, and the deep earthy scent of truffles all around you.

The experience blends education, flavour and atmosphere, making it one of Australia’s most stunning truffle encounters—just one hour from Melbourne.
